Fed up with the people pumping millions into the local economy who traveled there after massive marketing campaigns by local governments, the Miami Beach police announced a curfew will go into effect Thursday after a wave of violence swept through the city, the Miami Herald reports.
“Over the last two nights, five innocent people were shot in our streets,” Mayor Dan Gelber said during a hastily called press conference in front of City Hall Monday afternoon. Gelber claims the city doesn’t promote the city for Spring Breakers: “We don’t ask for it, promote it, or encourage it. We just endure it.”
The curfew will impact all of South Beach from midnight to 6 a.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday night until further notice. Businesses serving alcohol will have to close at midnight, and the streets will be cleared.
The city is implementing these measures after a weekend where there were two separate shootings in South Beach injured five people. Also, the police have reported a number of incidents of revelers throwing things at officers, injuring them.
