Taras Ostapchuk, a Kyiv native who worked as chief engineer aboard a yacht owned by Putin crony and weapons tycoon Alexander Mikheev until he attempted to sink the 155-foot vessel as it was docked on the Spanish Mediterranean island of Mallorca on February 26, tells CNN he’s returned to his native Ukraine to join the army. “I made a statement to the police that I tried to sink the boat as a political protest of Russian aggression,” he told CNN about the sinking attempt. “You have to choose. Either you are with Ukraine or not. You have to choose, will there be a Ukraine, or will you have a job… I don’t need a job if I don’t have Ukraine… Now I serve in the army, and I hope that my service will bring our victory closer,” Ostapchuk said. Spanish cops arrested Ostapchuk for the sabotage attempt, but he left for Ukraine the next day. It’s not clear if he still faces charges, as the boat was seized on March 15th by Spanish authorities.
