Nearly a year after the collapse of the Champlain Towers in nearby Surfside, another Florida residential complex has been evacuated because it was deemed structurally unsafe, forcing dozens of households to relocate, the Associated Press reports.
Officials in North Miami Beach ordered residents of the Bayview 60 Homes out of their homes after an inspection revealed the building at risk of collapse. The five-story building was built in 1972 and has 60 individual units.
The Champlain Towers collapse claimed 98 lives when it occurted in the early morning hours of June 24th. Residents of that 13-story tower had complained for years about cracks in the building and other signs of structural deficiency. With its political philosophy of lax regulations and little government interference, Florida’s political environment likely played into the lack of inspections and enforcement, which directly led to the loss of lives.
