New York City police announced that the still-at-large shooter who opened fire on a city subway train in Brooklyn Tuesday morning had three extended-capacity magazines with him, but his .380 caliber handgun jammed, likely saving numerous lives, ABC News reports.
Twenty-nine people were treated for injuries in the incident, with five remaining in serious but stable condition. Many of the injured were hurt as people stampeded away from the scene, where the shooter had deployed a smoke canister to cover his tracks and cause confusion.
Police recovered the shooters backpack, which held one loaded magazine. Another magazine was located on the ground by the backpack, as was the gun, which police say jammed because the magazine was not properly seated in the magazine well. It was not specified how many shots the gunman fired, or if the magazine found on the ground was loaded or empty.
The suspect remains at large. Police warn that he should still be considered an “active shooter” even though it is unknown if he has weapons.
