Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona announced that the department has issued a change to the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program that will allow 110,000 workers to have their student loan debt forgiven, CNBC reports.
Written by the GW Bush Administration, the forgiveness program allows people to get their loans discharged after making 120 monthly payments without defaulting if they work either as a nonpartisan government employee or a worker at a registered charity. However, the rules governing the program were so poorly written, eligibility for the program is hard to determine, with many of those applying finding out they were eligible at one point but were no longer, or people who are eligible believing they are not.
The debt forgiveness is then granted through special directives like the one Cardona issued that open windows for applications to be open regularly.
