More than 100 new graduates of Wiley College, a small historically black college in Marshall, Texas learned that an anonymous benefactor had paid off all of their outstanding college debt, totally roughly $300,000, the Associated Press reports.
Internationally known for its debate team, which was immortalized in the 2008 movie The Great Debaters, Wiley has around 1,400 students enrolled across all disciplines.
“We are constantly communicating with donors to assist students in these ways so that they can begin their after-college experience with less debt,” Herman J. Felton Jr., Wiley’s president and CEO, said in the news release.
