American artist Andy Warhol’s iconic pop-art silk screen “Shot Sage Blue Marilyn,” depicting sex symbol Marilyn Monroe, was sold at auction Monday for a record $195 million, shattering the previous high price for a work by an American artist, the New York Times reports.
The previous record holder was Jean Michel-Basquiat’s “Untitled” painting, which sold for $110 million in 2017. That painting broke the record that had been held by another Warhol piece “Silver Car Crash (Double Disaster)” sold for $104.5 million in 2013.
“There is a lot of appetite, there is a lot of money and there is a lot of quality,” said the Austrian gallerist Thaddaeus Ropac, who was at the sale. “With all these things, it should work.”
