Perhaps the most famous native of the town, Oscar-winning actor Matthew McConaughey mourned the murder of 19 fourth grade students and their two teachers at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, urging politicians to take action to stop further violence, Deadline reports.
“As Americans, Texans, mother and fathers, it’s time we re-evaluate, and renegotiate our wants from our needs,” McConaughey posted on Instagram. “We need to rearrange our values and find a common ground above this devastating American reality that has tragically become our children’s issue.”
At one time thought to be a candidate for governor Texas, the actor is an outspoken advocate for mental health services and runs a charity that helps boys and girls learn how to mature and deal with problems in healthy, productive manners.”
“This is an epidemic we can control, and whichever side of the aisle we may stand on, we all know we can do better,” McConaughey said. “We must do better. Action must be taken so that no parent has to experience what the parents in Uvalde and the others before them have endured.”
Having lived in Uvalde until he was 11 years old, McConaughey went to a predecessor elementary school to Robb Elementary.
