Sheryl Sandberg, the COO of Facebook’s parent company Meta, announced that she will step down after fourteen years with the social media company–and an industry–that has undergone significant changes during her tenure, the Associated Press reports.
Having joined Facebook from Google in 2008, Sandberg was the second-in-command of an organization that went from a fledgling social media company to a media powerhouse through acquisitions and service additions.
“When I took this job in 2008, I hoped I would be in this role for five years. Fourteen years later, it is time for me to write the next chapter of my life,” Sandberg wrote on her Facebook page, forgoing the current trend of making major announcements on Twitter, where people see them.
