A synagogue in South Florida has filed a lawsuit to overturn the law signed by Republican Florida Governor Ron DeSantis that bars abortion after the 15th week of pregnancy, saying it violates state constitutional guarantees of privacy and religious freedom, the Miami Herald reports.
Filed in Leon County, the lawsuit by the Congregation L’Dor Va-Dor seeks an injunction barring the law from going into effect July 1st, but also intends to challenge the law’s legality. The Boynton Beach synagogue notes that the Jewish faith does not have any limitation on abortion.
“For Jews, all life is precious and thus the decision to bring new life into the world is not taken lightly or determined by state fiat,” the lawsuit said. “In Jewish law, abortion is required if necessary to protect the health, mental or physical well-being of the woman, or for many other reasons not permitted under [the new law]. As such, the act prohibits Jewish women from practicing their faith free of government intrusion and thus violates their privacy rights and religious freedom.”
