Donald Trump received a federal subpoena in early June demanding that he turn over government documents he illegally had at Mar-a-Lago, and he refused to comply with the subpoena, the New York Times reports, setting off a string of events that led to the FBI seizing the documents after receiving a court-issued warrant.
Disgraced former The Hill staff writer John Solomon, who was designated by Trump to serve as one of his liaisons with the National Archive to facilitate the return of documents Trump never should have had. Solomon was reportedly fired from The Hill for failing to disclose his participation in a plan to disgrace Joe Biden by promoting falsehoods relating to US policy toward Ukraine; Solomon was in the room planning the scheme with Rudy Giuliani, Joe diGenova, Victoria Toensing, and a representative of then-Congressman Devin Nunes, but in all his reporting for The Hill, he failed to disclose he was part of the conspiracy.
Similarly, in a blog post from early Thursday, Solomon neglects to mention that he was responsible for making sure the documents made it back to the National Archives. Instead, he framed the story as Trump cooperating working to comply with the subpoena rather than actually complying with the subpoena, which would have meant to literally turn the boxes of documents over as the law dictates, rather than obstructing the process.
The fact that Trump had more than two months to comply with the subpoena before the FBI seized at least a dozen boxes of federal documents, including some classified material, demonstrates the Trump camp’s resistance to complying with the law even after they knew they were in violation of it.
Trump has been cautioned by Republicans that he should not react explosively to the FBI warrant and subsequent search of Mar-a-Lago to recover the documents, fearing that more damaging material would be uncovered by the FBI search. The FBI reportedly tried to downplay the warrant execution at Trump’s Florida supper club and crash pad, opting to characterize it as a simple matter of reclaiming government property, but Trump publicized the event to frame himself as a victim of an overreaching Biden Administration seeking to punish a political opponent. In fact, with these new revelations, Trump and his agents knew they were in violation of the law and continued to fail to comply with the court orders and the law.
