With Attorney General Merrick Garland publicly declaring he was requesting the release of the search and seizure warrant executed at his Florida supper club and vacation residence Mar-a-Lago, the spotlight moves squarely to Donald Trump. Normally, it’s a place he loves, but not this time.
As summarized by USA Today, Trump and his cracked legal team have 24 hours from Garland’s filing to respond, where they can contest the release of the warrant with a claim that the release could do irreparable harm to Trump or his chance of a fair legal outcome, or that the release would cause some other kind of “injury” to Trump. We’ll know by 3 p.m. ET Friday if Trump will challenge the release.
Will he, or won’t he? If he doesn’t, the public will learn, likely Friday, what the FBI agents who conducted the search were searching for; multiple media outlets have said the documents were classified Top Secret, with the Washington Post reporting some of them dealt with nuclear weapons.
That would be devasting to the Trump cheerleaders who are pulling excuses out their asses to defend Trump. These apologists might think twice about defending the careless handling of the nation’s nuclear secrets. For cryin’ out loud, these things were in boxes in the basement a supper club in Florida, secured only by a locked door, with no one at the location having a sufficient security clearance to even know the papers existed.
They may think twice; it won’t stop them from forever glorifying Trump, but they may stop the whining that the search warrant was an abuse of power and a witchhunt.
But Trump hasn’t released it himself, which is a sign that he doesn’t want it public. While some of the information in the warrant might be covered under some security classification–which apparently doesn’t mean anything to Trump–Trump could’ve opted to release everything but the classified addendum which would contain the sensitive information.
Trump could block it and make the claim which is false, but familiar: “IT’S A WITCHHUNT!!! I’M A MARTYR!!! IT’S ALL POLITICAL!!!” That would feed his cult’s self-victimization fetish and fuel the aggrievement they always feel. It’s what they need, and he may choose to feed his cult.
My guess: he’ll move to block it. Trump cannot handle embarrassment, and he loves being The Victim. Nothing is ever his fault, so he might think trying to delay the release until a judge hears his lawyers’ arguments might give him enough time to formulate a talking point about why he needed classified documents/nuclear secrets in the basement of Mar-a-Lago.
And bonus prediction: When he posts his Toot Salvo Twat Focal Truth Social excuse, he’ll refer to how he’s oppressed by his tax returns that are still under audit… for the last seven years.
