A bill passed by the Texas legislature last year is coming into full focus now that the school year has begun. In June 2021, the Texas Legislature passed SB 2158, which provided government-procured DNA identification kits to students so their parents could take samples to be used if the child goes “missing or trafficked.”
A parent posted the notice from the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District, noting that the kits should stay with the parents at home and not be returned to the school. Of course, the kits won’t be used to track down trafficked children; they’re being collected to identify children shot during the frequent mass shootings at schools occurring in the US. So Texas won’t do much to stop school shootings, but Governor Greg Abbott will help you ID your kid’s faceless body easier.
