A 50-ish-year-old Amazon delivery driver’s body was found in a yard outside a home in Excelsior Springs, about 30 miles north of Kansas City, Missouri, the victim of an apparent dog attack, USA Today reports.
Sheriff’s deputies were called to a neighborhood Monday night after neighbors noticed an idling Amazon truck parked outside of a home for an extended period of time around 7 p.m. local time. After arriving on the scene, deputies found the body of a man in the home’s front yard.
As the deputies tried to check on the body, a German Shepherd what appeared to be a Mastiff approached them aggressively, forcing the officers to fire in self-defense. One of the dogs was hit by a round, and both retreated into the house. A deputy went into the home to see if there were any other victims and was forced to shoot and kill both animals.
Neighbors say the dogs were treated well and not abused. The owners reportedly had traveled out of town and left the dogs home alone, with access in and out of the house through a dog door.
