International nuclear regulatory officials are warning of a potential disaster as shelling increases around and in the area containing Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, Ukraine’s six-reactor Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Station, ABC News reports.
Rafael Mariano Grossi, the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, reported that although the plant has been struck by shellfire, no radiation has been released and the power is still able to operate safely. The area targeted allowed reactors 5 and 6 to operate and supply electricity to Ukraine during the coming winter months.
In addition to the plant, Russian shelling damaged infrastructure in the Zaporizhzhia region as well as targeting a residential area where about thirty houses were destroyed.
