The Supreme Court, unethically stacked by Republicans, will take up a case on the legality of President Joe Biden’s effort to unburden federal student loan borrowers of up to $20,000 in debt, based on their personal income, as conservatives try to undermine Democratic policies that help working-class Americans.
According to NPR, the Court announced it will hear arguments in the case in February 2023. Six Republican-led states–Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and South Carolina–filed the lawsuit claiming the administration unconstitutionally applied laws and regulations from the pandemic and other situations to justify the student loan forgiveness program.
A lower court had previously denied the states’ claims that they have been irreparably harmed by the loan forgiveness because blah blah blah Biden did it and it will make Republicans look bad. However, another court issued an injunction to stop the program from proceeding, prompting the administration to pause payments for student loans until the issue is resolved in the courts.
