House January 6th Select Committee chair Congressman Bennie Thompson told reporters on Tuesday the committee has decided to issue unspecified criminal referrals to the DOJ. Thompson did not elaborate much besides saying that referring witnesses for perjury charges is “part of the discussion.” Worth noting that referrals for anything other than contempt do not carry any more weight than simply reporting a crime to the FBI, meaning only contempt actually compels federal prosecutors to investigate. That said, crimes like perjury and witness tampering are the kind of offenses the committee would have a large body of evidence for as it would have occurred pertinent to their proceedings and would be more persuasive than evidence of conspiracy or other offenses the committee believe Trump and his minions engaged in during the lead-up to the insurrection.
