House Democrats are in talks with a handful of moderate Republicans to do an end run around the Freedom Caucasians’ plan to destroy the global economy when the US federal debt ceiling is expected to be hit by putting a discharge petition to the floor, the Wall Street Journal reports.
The process is going to be very tricky given the arcane rules that govern the process, with the steps to a discharge petition taking up to three months just to get to a vote and there’s no guarantee there will be the five or six Republican signatures and then votes to pass such a bill. However the 18 Republicans representing districts Biden won in 2020 give Democrats a lot of room to work with as being party to a national debt default and the ensuing chaos is probably not something an incumbent wants on their record when facing purple district voters in 2024.
