The German government has withdrawn any objections it has for Poland to send its German-made Leopard II tanks to Ukrainian forces defending their homeland against Russian invaders, Reuters reports, paving the way for the first delivery of Western modern main battle tanks to Ukraine.
Germany had previously objected to its client nations sending the Leopard IIs to Ukraine, saying it wanted a commitment from the United States that the Biden Administration would also send the American main battle tank, the M1 Abrams. President Joe Biden has not authorized such a delivery. Besides the risks of German technology falling into the hands of Russia, German political leaders are wary of the image of German tanks roaming through Ukraine hunting Russians, again.
