Having a meltdown because the military will pay the travel costs for members of the military or their families who have to go to a different state to obtain a safe abortion–as it would with any needed medical procedure–Alabama football coach turned Republican Senator Tommy Tuberville has blocked the Senate approvals needed for more than 200 promotions for general and admirals, blocking officers from filling key positions, like the senior US officer in NATO.
According to Military.com, Tuberville’s justification for blocking the promotions is unique: the Pentagon has too many generals. “Experts have known for more than a decade that the military is top heavy. We do not suffer from a lack of generals,” Tuberville said. “When my dad served in World War II, we had one general for every 6,000 troops. Think about that: one for every 6,000. Now, we have one general for every 1,400 enlisted service members.”
