There’s bipartisan momentum in the Senate to allow cameras in federal courtrooms, finally ending the long-standing void of images and video from inside trials and proceedings, with Old Man Charles Grassley telling CBS News it’s really simply a matter of fitting it into the agenda.
Grassley is among a number of Republican and Democratic sponsors to the Sunshine in the Courtroom Act of 2023, giving federal judges discretion to allow news cameras into courts but allowing leeway for when witnesses need their identities protected. “There is an overwhelmingly sense, at least at that level, that Americans deserve to see what’s happening,” said Dem co-sponsor Senator Dick Blumenthal, adding that public interest in January 6th trials and audio access to the Supreme Court were the main precipitating factors. “This is an idea whose time has come.”
Should the Senate find time to vote on it, the next real hurdle would be the House, where it’ll probably get stuck with Freedom Caucasian amendments in which former presidents are exempt from having their trials televised or some other stupid bullshit that will ruin it for everyone.
