Several current and former US officials tell the Financial Times the Biden Administration put heavy pressure on a number of Brazilian military and political leaders to stay the fuck out of disgraced former President Jair Bolsonaro’s pre-election plot to remain in power in the event he lost.
“It’s Brazilian institutions that really made sure that the elections took place,” says a senior US administration official about the effort which took place across public and private channels. “What was important was that we conveyed the right messages and maintained policy discipline.” The FT report says Biden himself specifically was hell bent against the “Trump of the Tropics” to pull the same shit the Trump of America had before, during, and after his election loss. Sources emphasized that the Biden Administration’s strategy was not to favor one candidate over another, but to simply make sure the election was free and fair despite Bolsonaro’s worst efforts.
