In an “explosive” Sunday article “BREAKING EXCLUSIVE: Same DOJ Attorney Prosecuting President Trump, Declined to Prosecute Andrew McCabe for Lying Under Oath, Gave Imran Away Sweetheart Deal, and More,” with a typo in the headline because the guy’s name is actually Imran Awan, the Gateway Pundit “connects the dots” with a current member of Justice Department special counsel Jack Smith’s team, DOJ Fraud and Public Corruption Section Chief JP Cooney, who gave “gave Imran Omar [sic] a sweetheart deal after getting caught spying on the US Congress.”
The article also technically isn’t an “exclusive” because it was first printed at JoeHoft.com, the eponymous blog run by Jim “Gateway Pundit” Hoft’s twin brother Joe. Which in turn was largely sourced from a Saturday morning tweet thread by batshit insane MAGA influencer Julie Kelly.
Anyway the “report” is poorly written and extremely hard to follow, and basically all it amounts to is that the case against Trump is “rigged” because these high-level Justice Department prosecutors who worked other politically charged investigations, including the contempt of Congress case against Steve “Bannan,” are working on the Trump case too. But the callout to the obscure fan favorite Imran Awan makes this a gem. Awan, a Pakistani-American IT technician who worked for Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman-Schultz and other Democrats in the House until 2017 when he and a few members of his staff, including his two brothers and his wife, were caught skimming equipment out of purchase orders, probably for resale. Awan was arrested at the airport trying to flee to Pakistan and in 2018 pleaded guilty to an unrelated bank fraud count, then was sentenced to time served plus three months probation (by none other than Judge Tanya Chutkan).
Of course that some asshole who worked for Democrats was stealing from taxpayers wasn’t good enough of a “scandal” and the story got blown into what Joe Hoft describes as a “Pakistani spy ring” in which Wasserman-Schultz and others were somehow complicit in allowing the government of the large and deeply dysfunctional Muslim country to infiltrate Congress. Obviously there was no evidence of this and you’d have to be pretty fucking stupid to think the Trump-era Justice Department didn’t subject this guy to a lengthy proctology exam to determine whether or not he had any suspect connections to Pakistani intel agencies or terrorist groups before the “sweetheart deal.”
Which is exactly why the fanboys took it and ran with it back then when they needed to fill in some gaps in the action with “Obamagate” and the Russia Investigation. Except Imran Awan never really got that much playtime on the MAGA Top 40, probably owing to the fact that liberals largely just shrugged and said “Who the fuck are you talking about?” when a troll would bring him up. A good villain needs to be a hero to the other side, and the libs simply not caring about some jerkoff who got caught stealing from Congress while Robert Mueller was arresting Trump minions left and right all but assured the right wing propaganda complex’s efforts to elevate Awan ended up going to waste. Now all he’s good for is just one repeatedly misspelled example of a connection to a larger “Deep State” conspiracy against them on a dogshit website like the Gateway Pundit.
