After a 14-year-old Massachusetts boy died after undertaking the “One Chip Challenge” involving its grotesquely hot oddity, Paqui has pulled its product from the shelves, putting a quick end to a social media trend, ABC News reports.
Harris Wolobah died September 1st after eating the chip seasoned with a mix of Carolina Reaper Pepper and Naga Viper Pepper, which both have Scoville ratings over 1.3 million. It’s unclear what precisely caused Wolobah’s death other than it was some type of crisis caused by his reaction to eating the chip.
“The Paqui One Chip Challenge is intended for adults only, with clear and prominent labeling highlighting the chip is not for children or anyone sensitive to spicy foods or who has food allergies, is pregnant or has underlying health conditions,” the company said in a statement while noting they’ve seen a number of reports of teens doing something they’re not supposed to do… ’cause that never happens.
