French President Emmanuel Macron announced that he would take steps to start the process to ensuring access to reproductive care by enshrining the right to abortion in the French Constitution by 2024, the Associated Press reports.
Abortion was decriminalized in France in 1975, just after the Roe decision in the US. Macron’s announcement was reportedly sparked by concerns a right-wing faction could re-criminalize the medical procedure in the future, the way an appointed group of jurists reversed Roe after nearly a half century–which the most-recently appointed conservative members of the Court all have said was “precedent.“
