A US military operation on Thursday to apparently intercept a ship in the Gulf of Aden off Somalia went awry, with two Navy SEALs rappelling down a rope to land on the ship falling into the ocean, the Associated Press reports. The pair remain missing, and a search is underway.
Details of the operation are scant, but Pentagon officials say the mission was not part of a different international effort to protect shipping in the Red Sea from missiles and drones being launched by Houthi rebels in Yemen and the subsequent US attacks on those rebels. The military has undertaken other missions in the same region to seize weapons going to various destinations in the Middle East.
