Random thoughts Friday, Volume CLXI

  • If Donald Trump paid one dollar each second, it would take him roughly 14 years, four months and 24 days to pay off the current amount of the New York civil decision.
  • Alabama’s Supreme Court decision demonstrates how shallow GOP policies are.  They do not consider the consequences of their culture war crazes.  The real-world pain that is already occurring for IVF patients in the state is unimaginable, and the opportunity for these aspiring parents may be lost because of assholes in robes.
  • How fun would it be if George Soros put up the money to fund Trump’s (certain to fail) appeal?  Think the RNC would make a move when their frontrunner is in the pocket of the man they’ve demonized for more than a decade? Or would he suddenly be A-OK after Don calls him “a good friend, real good guy.”
  • Republicans cannot condemn the obviously erroneous Alabama “supreme” court decision on embryos because of their cult programming:  they can never condemn any act, even the most heinous or erroneous, because they are incapable of saying a Party position is wrong. Think not?  See also Trump and Santos, and listen to the resounding silence decrying Carlson’s interview of Putin.
  • I’m happy Nikki Haley stays in the race for one reason:  Trump needs to spend more money.  That’s less money for the general election and less money for his defense.
  • To those who claim there was “no victim” in Trump’s fraud, I simply ask if Trump should be allowed to keep his fraudulently-obtained profits after he had been caught.  Fraudsters don’t get to profit simply because some of their victims are silent.  (Oh, and I’m sure the shareholders in those banks would like the half-billion they lost.)
  • “Letitia James, US Attorney General” has a nice ring to it for a second Biden term, but alas, while it would bring a true sense of justice to the administration, it would only end in a stream of baseless accusations from the far right that no doubt would end in violence.
  • So craven for power are GOP leaders like Comer, Jordan and Smith, they uncritically cited Russian disinformation during public hearings in an attempt to take down a duly-elected President of the United States, and not one member of the GOP will be held responsible for their participation.  In fact, it wouldn’t even merit an intraparty review of their process or their leadership.
  • Criminy, I’m embarrassed for Tim Scott.
  • “Under Pressure” by Queen and David Bowie is one of the best-engineered pop songs in history.  Not only is it well written with defined parts and thankfully not overproduced, the depth of sound captures you every time, making you feel you’re in the room as they’re recording it.  And fuck you very much, Vanilla Ice.
  • In a sane world, Jordan, Comer, and Smith would be removed from their committee chairs for showing such bad judgment as to promote false information.  But not in this generation of “the Party of Personal Responsibility.”  It’s not their faults that they promoted false information with apparent origins in Russia.  Nope, it was the FBI’s fault for providing the evidence the trippy trio subpoenaed, even though the FBI itself put up red flags about it.  But sure, the FBI’s the problem.
  • Hey, Tommy Tuberville, who’s this “we” who you believe need to have more kids?  You mean, the rich, white gentry of Alabama who can afford IVF?
  • A fashion start-up has usurped the name of one of our former dogs, and I do not like it.  He was a working dog; he would not be happy.
  • Little remembered fact:  Ivana got her divorce from Donald with “cruel and inhumane treatment” as grounds.  Her sons saw that behavior, which explains a lot of their current pathology.
  • Waffle toppings:  Butter and maple syrup (not the sugary stuff) dusted with cinnamon.  But fruit syrup and whipped cream works, too.  Hell, so does chocolate syrup, or ice cream, or chicken.  Moldable, portable and flavorable, waffles are an ideal food delivery advice, and damn good on their own.
  • It says a lot that in the Fani Willis trial, a former governor didn’t want to take the position as special prosecutor because he feared for his safety.  Justice in our country is now meted out only as the Cult sees fit.
  • Craving Lorna Doones and orange juice, I donated blood for the first time since the pandemic shutdown.  Eligible once again, I had forgotten how rejuvenating it is.  If you’re eligible, I recommend scheduling an appointment to donate now.
  • Matt Gaetz is among his people.  And when I say “his people,” I mean young, naive, easily impressionable girls.
  • This weekend’s baking project:  scones.  More complicated than cookies, but heartier than cake.  A great therapy project for mind and hand, plus delicious goodness at end.
