Butch Wilmore and Sunita Williams, despite being stranded on board the International Space Station until February, will be able to vote absentee in the 2024 election using a special secure PDF, thanks to a bill passed by the Texas state legislature allowing space voting in 1997, NBC News reports.
“I sent down my request for a ballot today,” Wilmore, said on a Friday call with reporters. “It’s a very important role that we play as citizen including those elections, and NASA makes it very easy for us to do that.” Williams agreed with the sentiment. “It’s a very important duty that we have as citizens and looking forward to being able to vote from space, which is pretty cool,” she said on the call.
It’s not clear if Picasso-faced Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has sued NASA to invalidate the two astronauts’ votes yet. There’s probably some way that it’s unconstitutional or something.
