A perusal of the reviews of ICEBlock – currently rated 2.5 out of 5 stars – on the Apple iOS App Store reveals several of the 10 visible user submissions for the app are politically motivated opinions rather than sincere weighings of the merits of the app’s user interface, performance, an so on.
For example, a one-star review headlined “Unpatriotic” says “Hispanic here, we left our countries to come to America to flee from crime and you want them to stay here. Here’s a suggestion why don’t you have them move in with you? Immigration is a privilege not a right! And everyone should follow the law. This is incredibly disturbing that you would put actual Americans at risk for those that feel they have a right to be here. Not to mention the hundreds of actual terrorists that came through the border. Honestly you should be ashamed and anyone who is supporting your madness. I am Latina ICE gets these criminals out of here and may God protect all of you always!!! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸”
Another MAGA iPhone user called it a “Violent Extremist National Security Threat” and then simply copied and pasted ICE Director Todd Lyons’s statement in which he claimed “CNN is willfully endangering the lives of officers who put their lives on the line every day and enabling dangerous criminal aliens to evade US law. Is this simply reckless ‘journalism’ or overt activism.”
So no, that one-star “review” was not about the app itself. One five-star review from “So you have to give your location to use the ICEBlock app. I hope people consider that ICE can use this data to find all the people who are attempting to obstruct justice. If the obstruction is a contributing factor to criminal activity against or death of law enforcement personnel you could be accessory or co-conspirator. Like they say play stupid games you get stupid prizes. 😉 👍” The reviewer, a “Nick Reimann,” seems to have been inspired by old MAGA Disqus posts on The Hill in which the Trump fanboys would reply to liberal comments with warnings of federal agents coming to effect their arrest on charges of sedition and treason for the crime of mocking President Trump on the internet.
As for the more apparently sincere reactions, one three-star reviewer wrote “The concept is amazing and just what we need right now, but it won’t work. Data won’t show up and it won’t let me report a sighting that I am standing 50 ft or less from. Please fix this so I can let the community know where they need to be careful. I need my community to stay safe in this time of federal overreach.” Another, also three stars, said “You should expand your map preference so we can check out nearby cities as well and that way we can share the information with others about sightings who do not have the app. But thank you for this, It is definitely a start.”
