The tsunami generated by Tuesday’s 8.8-magnitude earthquake off Russia’s Pacific coast has thus far thankfully turned out to be pretty mild and no significant damage has been wrought on the many American coastlines and territorial islands in its path so far, Time Magazine reports.
The worst of it occurred in Russia itself and even there the waves were only about 10 to 13 feet high, causing moderate damage to the sparsely-populated region. Japan’s highest waves were 10 feet in isolated areas of Hokkaido, while California and Alaska saw crests under 2 feet high. “So far we have not seen a wave of consequence, which is a great relief to us,” Hawaii Gov Josh Green said.
