Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, a key witness in the Trump impeachment proceedings, intents to retire from the US Army, noting that his future in the military “will forever be limited” due to a campaign of retaliation led by the President, according to a CNN report.
Trump removed Vindman from his position as the Ukraine expert for the National Security Council after testifying before the House about his reactions to Trump’s request for election assistance to Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky on July 25, 2019.
Vindman was scheduled to rotate to the Army War College, but was told by some superiors that he would need a “rehabilitative assignment” before that posting. A senior officer quipped about sending him to “man a radar station in Alaska,” the source said.
There was speculation that Vindman would be passed over for a scheduled promotion because of his testimony. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.) vowed to block all officer promotions if Vindman was denied his promotion.
Along with Vindman being removed from his NSC position, Vindman’s twin brother was fired from his position as an NSC lawyer at the White House.
