Random thoughts Friday, Volume CLXIII

  • Joe Biden hit the ball out of the park, scored the overtime goal, and kicked the winning field goal as time ran out.  That State of the Union had power, vision, and opportunity.  It presented a stark contrast to the GOP’s intentionally frightening and false view of America as a decrepit hellscape.  The President’s vision was positive, and Americans will always veer toward hope.
  • While Lara Trump taking the helm of the RNC screams nepotism, remember what Trump’s first pick for the job did:  she led the Party to Trump’s reelection loss; losing the Senate and another seat in the subsequent midterm; underperforming in the midterm; and flipping about a dozen state legislative chambers.  Let’s hope Trump’s second choice for the job serves Democrats as well as her predecessor did.
  • I guess Kyrsten Sinema just wasn’t in the mood for a threeway.
  • Super Tuesday is stupid.  Hell, the whole primary schedule is just plain stupid.  Days where only one individual state has a primary early on fucks up the whole system by giving small populations outsized influence.  Solution:  four sets of primary dates spaced three weeks apart, with states divided equally among the four weeks.  Every four years, the order of the four sets rotates, and the constituent members of each of the four sets are updated every two decades.
  • Katie Britt is what you get when you have no policies or solutions, just performance art.  She continues the GOP’s streak of hilariously bad SOTU responses.  It seriously had the “I’m not a witch” vibe. The only question now is who plays her in the likely SNL skit.
  • In the 2020 campaign, Joe Biden was up against the sitting president, and as a senior statesman, he was somewhat deferential to the office of his opponent in debates.  Now, sitting as the top dog, Joe can rain down on Trump in a face-to-face confrontation.  Joe will respect the office, but Joe will also defend the office.
  • Trump will undoubtedly demand Nikki Haley “kiss the ring” in some type of public way or face expulsion from the Party.  He cannot have a popular dissenter in his midst, and she must publicly prostrate and humiliate herself to placate his bruised self-image.  Lara Trump will enforce this through her distribution of Party resources.
  • International Women’s Day isn’t just a day to honor the contributions to our global society; it’s also a time to focus on issues important to women, like reproductive health, equal pay, and voting rights.  Joe Biden did that last night.  No Republican has done that in decades.
  • The only thing proven by the Republicans’ relentless pursuit in the impeachment of Hunter Biden is that Joe Biden is a loving and dedicated father who is trying to help his son through a battle with addiction.  Democrats need to make this the message because unfortunately, virtually every family in America can understand and sympathize with that situation, and they will respect the honesty.
  • Prediction:  Trump will refuse to debate Biden more than once, claiming Biden’s “persecution” of Trump doesn’t give him time to prepare.  He’ll also claim Biden is withholding intelligence from him so he doesn’t have needed information, a claim that will be met by a loud round of mocking.
  • Marge finally broke down and wore her clown costume to her side gig.
  • Required resource:  “The Essential Calvin & Hobbes” (available for free via Kindle if you have a Prime membership).  When the craziness gets to be too much, retreat to the adventures of a young boy and his stuffed tiger.
  • My favorite Senate race for this year will be Texas’s Allred versus Cruz:  an intelligent NFL player against the drama camp dropout.  Cruz will not be able to run away from the linebacker-turned-lawyer.
  • The peanut is unquestionably America’s nut:  from the iconic sandwich to ballpark snack, it’s rightfully ubiquitous because it is both delicious and versatile.  Mr. Peanut is a national treasure. Second best nut:  pistachio.  Like the peanut, it’s delicious, you have to work for it, and it has its own ice cream; it’s not just a throw-in like walnuts or pecans, but it can help if you need it.
  • Mitch McConnell’s endorsement of Trump was an inevitability from a man who will sneak out of history with his horrific anti-constitutional legacy overshadowed by his abject hypocrisy and the crimes of his President.
  • On Monday, Dolce & Gabbana advertised on The Daily Show.  During the same segment, Fox ran a commercial for Trump’s mugshot $2 bill.  Final issue price: $39… but available to you for $19.95 (plus $4.95 shipping and handling).
  • Best graduation or housewarming gift for someone going out on their own for the first time:  a good chef’s knife that needs a block or a case, not one you throw in a drawer.  A good knife lasts a lifetime; a great one lasts many.
  • The baked mac-and-cheese last week was perhaps the best I’ve ever made.  (Props to Alton Brown for the tips.)  If you skimp and don’t make the crust, you’ve done all the work but missed the best part.
  • I’d say it’s great that Daylight Saving Time takes an hour away from political advertising, but we just get it back in November, two days before Election Day.  Yay.  Just what we need.
