Random thoughts Friday, Volume CLXXVII

  • Had the Baltimore Key Bridge collapse happened under the previous administration, I’m convinced no aid would have been released until the name of the replacement bridge was committed to honor Trump.
  • Yep, Hunter Biden was guilty.  Honestly, we knew he was guilty of the crime he was charged with, but I don’t think he merited prosecution.  He acted out of fear stemming from addiction, not criminal intent, and he’s been sober for years.  See how that works?  We can do seemingly contrary things:  think a verdict is proper, feel a charge is unjust, and not see it as the disintegration of our Constitutional government.  We’ll just work to correct things in the future.
  • Since I bought my first home, I have flown a flag–most times, the Stars and Stripes, although allowances given for the occasional team flags and the 2016-2021 display of the Maryland flag–and I would never think to deface it or dishonor it by flying it improperly.  When I fly the American flag, I’m flying our flag, not mine.  But it’s my responsibility to honor it.
  • Marge compares him to Christ.  Republicans on the Hill welcome him back to the site of the insurrection like he’s the Prodigal Son returning, complete with a cake.  His supporters say his Manhattan conviction makes him a martyr.  The messiah myth is strong in the cult.
  • MSNBC needs Jason Johnson on air daily hosting a show geared toward young voters.  He’s a college professor; he hears their concerns.  And he knows how to teach them in a respectful manner, unlike many pundits who talk down to them.
  • I’m still convinced Alito leaked the Dobbs decision.  He believes he can get away with anything, and as long as Roberts is Chief, he’s right.  Alito is the corruption in government he warns about.
  • Biden’s appearances in Italy got remarkably little media coverage for a summit of the world’s leaders during the Ukraine War. The only major coverage isn’t about policy or accomplishment, but appearance.  But that’s good:  A President’s overseas trip should be to the back of most Americans’ minds.  That’s normality.
  • I’ve been low.  I’ve never been “Tucker Carlson canceled me because I’m a bankrupt conspiracy theorist” low.  May both their rewards be just.
  • When Donald Trump took office, the US trade deficit was $503 billion.  He started his trade war in 2017. By 2019 our trade deficit was $575.5 billion, an increase of 15%.  Trump increased the trade deficit AND spent tens of billions to subsidize the US industries he crippled; farm subsidies alone went up 500% under Trump, from $4 billion to $20 billion.  Trump lost his trade war.
  • I really wish I had spent more time during my decades as a business traveler going to more museums and galleries, and fewer bars and restaurants, while on the road.  Don’t get me wrong:  I love the meals and entertainment, but I can’t imagine how many little items of art and history I missed between the Portlands in Oregon and Maine.
  • The top-line outcome of SCOTUS’s mifepristone ruling induced a sigh of relief, but Kavanaugh and Thomas laid out a roadmap for more reproductive health crises.  They are writing the arguments for their preferred plaintiffs.
  • I got to rescue a damsel in distress stranded with a flat tire on the side of the road this morning.  Put on the spare for her and she asked me to follow her home!  That’s what I get when I forget to renew our AAA membership.
  • It only takes just one persistent mosquito for you to appear insane to everyone else in the room.
  • I’m seriously Gyllenhaal’ed out.  Talk about overexposure. You can gyllenhaal ass outta here, Jake.  (We need more Maggie, though.  She’s the real talent in the family.)
  • Yeah, I like jimmies with my ice cream for the texture.  I’m a traditionalist that way.  You can keep the gummy worms and cake and the other add-ins.  A good ice cream flavor doesn’t need hangers-on.  Oh, and they’re jimmies, not sprinkles.
  • Don’t just drive by that local produce stand.  Stop in and get some fruit and veg for the week.  Support your local farmer because if you don’t, that farm will be a development within years.
  • The end of the school year thankfully means the end of the early morning alarm for my teacher wife.  She’s not the only one who welcomes it.
