Despite there being no actual evidence it’s happening yet, Republicans in South Dakota are worried that their dog-murdering former at-large congresswoman, governor, and current US Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem could within the next month abruptly launch a primary bid against sitting US Senator Mike Rounds – who is running for a third term – with these Mount Rushmore State Republicans telling the Atlantic that it would give her the staff and fundraising platform to insulate from an expected onslaught of House Dem oversight – and preempt the risk of Trump firing her.
Scumbag former-and-current Montana MAGA Congressman Ryan Zinke did something similar-ish back during Trump’s first failed administration, quitting his post as Secretary of the Interior in December 2018 just days before Dems retook the House gavels – though he didn’t actually run to return to his old seat until 2020. The House option is actually more readily accessible for Noem as current at-large South Dakota Congressman Dusty Johnson is running for governor.
