House Democrats Ted Lieu of California and Kathleen Rice of New York have called on FBI Director Christopher Wray to open an investigation into the call lame duck president Donald Trump had with Georgia state election officials in an attempt to undermine the state’s election results, NBC News reports.

“As members of Congress and former prosecutors, we believe Donald Trump engaged in solicitation of, or conspiracy to commit, a number of election crimes,” the pair wrote in a letter sent to Wray Monday. “We ask you to open an immediate criminal investigation into the president.”

During the Saturday call, Trump pressed Georgia Secretary of State to find enough votes for Trump to overturn the election results, which have been certified President-elect Joe Biden as the winner of the state’s popular vote. 

An audio recording of the call was released by the Washington Post Sunday.  On it, Trump can be heard pleading, cajoling and threatening Raffensperger and the secretary of state’s general counsel, Ryan Germany.

“So look. All I want to do is this. I just want to find 11,780 votes, which is one more than we have,” Trump said. “Because we won the state.”

Raffensperger repeatedly told Trump that the information Trump was claiming had been disproven and debunked by audits and recounts, facts Trump refused to accept.  Trump also claimed that his loss would negatively impact the Senate runoffs in Georgia, slated for Tuesday, because Republicans would doubt the integrity of the vote count.  (It should be noted that Trump and his minions are the ones casting doubt on vote integrity.)

“The evidence of election fraud by Mr. Trump is now in broad daylight.  Given the more than ample factual predicate, we are making a criminal referral to you to open an investigation into Mr. Trump,” the lawmakers wrote in the letter to Wray calling for an investigation.
