President Joe Biden will rescind the executive order from the former president that banned transgender people from serving in the United States military, according to CBS News.
The announcement could be made as early as Monday, in a ceremony with newly-confirmed Secretary of Defense of Lloyd Austin. The policy will revert back to the policy put in place by Secretary of Defense Ash Carter in 2016. Donald Trump announced the transgender ban in a tweet in 2017.
“I support the president’s plan or plan to overturn the ban,” Austin said on Tuesday when asked by Senator Kirsten Gillibrand during his confirmation hearing. “I truly believe, Senator, that as I said in my opening statement, that if you’re fit and you’re qualified to serve and you can maintain the standards, you should be allowed to serve. And, you can expect that I will support that throughout.”
