A statement from the US trade representative Katherine Tai announced that the Biden Administration would support a temporary waiver of patent protections for coronavirus vaccines to help speed the distribution of the medications during the pandemic.
As released on Twitter, Tai said that the pandemic calls for extraordinary measures, and the ambassador noted that the Administration will negotiate with the World Health Organization to temporarily halt the intellectual property protections claimed by the companies that created the vaccines.
“The Administration’s aim is to get as many safe and effective vaccines to as many people as possible,” Tai wrote.
