A man who shouted “Allah Akbar” killed three and wounded five in a knife attack in the German city of Würzburg, local police said, before being subdued by passers-by, the BBC reports. The attack took place around 5 p.m. local time in the town square.
The 24-year-old Somali man was taken into custody after receiving minor injuries. He had a history of mental problems including hospitalizations for psychiatric issues. He also had a police record, but nothing related to terrorism.
The five wounded were all in serious condition, Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann said, and their outcomes were still in doubt.
