While signing a series of executive orders to supposedly provide relief to the tens of millions of Americans struggling because of the coronavirus pandemic that’s swept the nation under his watch, President Trump vowed to make the payroll tax holiday he just signed permanent and “terminate” the tax, according to the Washington Post.
However, the payroll tax funds vital social safety net programs like Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.
Trump may not understand what the payroll taxes fund and there was no explanation how Trump intends to fund programs that he had promised not to cut as recently as February.
Trump also signed an executive order mandating that unemployment supplements be raised to $400 per week, but he has put the burden of paying for much of that increase on the states, an unfunded mandate that would push financial weak state budgets to the brink.
