You’d think that having to refund tens of millions of dollars in fraudulently obtained donations would’ve taught them a lesson, but never let it be said Republicans would put ethics and morals above conning people out of money.
One year after it was revealed that Donald Trump and GOP fundraisers bilked donors out of tens of millions of dollars in improperly obtained funds by having boxes on donation forms pre-checked to double the intended donation and then making it a recurring monthly donation, Trump is back at it with the same scam.
Clicking through a fundraising email from WinRed, the Republican’s for-profit fundraising operation that keeps a rumored 30% of the funds that it collects, one arrives at a website that solicits an answer to the question “Do you think President Trump should run?” Dismissing if the question relates to political aspirations and not a surprising exercise routine for the rotund exile, one notes that the box to make the donation a monthly expenditure is already checked.
During the 2020 election cycle, Trump and GOP organizations had to refund more than $135 million to people who had monthly donations withdrawn from their accounts without their consent–most of whom failed to see or uncheck boxes that doubled their donation and made it recurring.
A email from the Biden Team, received minutes after the Trump missive, also contained a link to a donation site for Democrats, but ethically, the “recurring donation” option was not pre-checked. In fact, the option to NOT make it recurring was pre-selected.
