Random thoughts Friday, Volume LII

  • Domestic terrorists, insurrectists, seditionists:  call the January 6th participants what you will, but don’t call them rioters.  Their intent was to undermine the Constitution, and they should be labeled accordingly.
  • The currently popular excuse for the insurrectionists making the rounds on conservative platforms is:  “They couldn’t be seditionists, look how they acted.  Did they try to install a new government?  Noooooo.  They were just mad citizens.  They got into the Capitol and then didn’t know what to do.”  It’s an interesting argument:  these boneheaded Trump fans were too dumb to commit sedition!  It won’t work, but it’ll be fun to see them try it, and interesting to see which MAGAt takes to Fox to say, “We ain’t dumb.  We’re smert.  Reel smert.”
  • I increasingly believe that the GOP reluctance to turn over texts and communications to the J6 Committee is due to not only their culpability for encouraging the domestic terrorists, but also for a mess of other malfeasance in their lives that would be exposed if anyone else saw the messages:  marital infidelities, financial crimes and corruption.  For example, imagine Jim Jordan, cowering in a corner as the mob approaches, texting his lover a final “I’m about to die, so I wanted to say I love you, Steve.  Yours forever, Jimmie” text.
  • First question to ask every member of Congress and candidate:  Do you use encrypted apps to conduct campaign or legislative business and if yes, why do you feel the need to use them?
  • Biden’s address on fighting for voting rights may have fallen short in the Senate, but the fervor and passion of it will be a focus point of the midterm election “get out the vote” drive.  It’ll set the tone for the campaigns, and frankly, the GOP going after voting rights and abortion this year is a gift for Democratic campaigns.
  • Medical care costs will skyrocket because people are avoiding a vaccine that costs $12 to produce in favor of ICU care that costs $10,000 per day.
  • The next time I hear about a “Confederate Heritage” celebration, I’m going to recruit some of our Black actor friends to attend with me.  I’ll be the plantation master and they will appear as my slaves, bound in chains.  I’ll loudly yell at my “slaves” everytime the speakers talk about the glory of the South.  If those yahoos want to celebrate the heritage, they need to be reminded that it wasn’t all petticoats and mint juleps.
  • (The above item is one of those really good “That’ll Show ‘Em” ideas that [1] I won’t really do and [2] won’t actually show ’em ’cause they’re ignorant.)
  • I’m diggin’ the music YouTubeTV plays during MSNBC commercials.  It’s the soundtrack you’d hear if you were perpetually walking the lobby of a W Hotel.
  • I’ve only had to have one vaccine–albeit, three shots of it–but I haven’t had to cycle through hydroxychloroquine, bleach, internal UV light, ivermectin, dirt, urine (human or camel), Viagra, bull dung and/or silver oxide infused sparkling water because the treatment I sought works.
  • The Oath Keepers are nothing short of a paramilitary group seeking to undermine our constitutional government.  The entire group and its individual members should be prosecuted as a terrorist group, and its operations should be defunded through civil claims, like the KKK.
  • At its most basic, fettuccine alfredo is mac-n-cheese for adults.  Better cheese and different noodles, granted, but still mac-n-cheese.  And there’s nothing wrong with that.
  • Trump’s associates are finding out how expensive it is to pin your fortunes to his coattails.  DC lawyers are rolling up the billable hours, and the GOP campaign donors are going to have to fund it all.
  • The transcripts of the testimony to the J6 Committee that I want to read, when made public:  Bannon, Meadows, and Eastman.  The most gossipy will be Kayleigh McEnerny.  The most brainwashed:  Stephen Miller.  The most entertaining–in a “look at the car wreck” way–will be Alex Jones’ testimony.
  • As this is the first anniversary week of the debut of Random Thoughts Friday, I feel that I should thank you all for making this a part of your week.  My contribution is only a part of the column; the best part is the comments.  So give yourselves a round of applause.
