Just one day after the prosecutors wrapped up their three week presentation, the lawyers for the four defendants rested their case in the trial of four men accused of conspiring to kidnap Democratic Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, the Associated Press reports.
Daniel Harris was the only one of the four to take the stand, wrapped up a day and a half of defense testimony by repeatedly claiming “absolutely not” when asked if he planned to kidnap Whitmer, whom conservatives targeted because of restrictions put in place to combat the spread of the coronavirus.
Harris is charged with Adam Fox, Barry Croft Jr., and Brandon Caserta in a plot to kidnap Whitmer from her vacation home in northern Michigan and trying her, which would lead to her execution.
A 24-year-old former Marine, Harris claimed he joined the Wolverine Watchmen militia group to keep his military skills sharp.
Prosecutors put on a substantial case, outlining a plan by more than a dozen alleged conservative terrorists who wanted to retaliate against Whitmer for quarantine and public health regulations. The group discussed destroying bridges and blocking roadways to prevent law enforcement from pursuing the group after kidnapping the governor.
