Republican Nebraska state Senator Mike McDonnell, a key vote required for the Trump-and-Lindsey Graham-backed plan to give the convicted felon former president a free Electoral College vote by reverting to the winner-take-all system of 48 other states, announced on Monday that he will not support the bill should Gov Jim Pillen call a special session, the Nebraska Examiner reports.

“Elections should be an opportunity for all voters to be heard, no matter who they are, where they live, or what party they support,” said McDonnell in a statement. “I have taken time to listen carefully to Nebraskans and national leaders on both sides of the issue. After deep consideration, it is clear to me that right now, 43 days from Election Day, is not the moment to make this change.” The term-limited McDonnell is said to be eyeing Omaha City Hall for his next move and fucking the town’s voters out of an Electoral College vote would’ve been a good way to guarantee defeat.

Without McDonnell’s support, the district, which Joe Biden flipped blue in 2020 after Trump won it in 2016 and Mitt Romney took it in 2012, seems an easy pickup for Vice President Kamala Harris as what little polling there has been found her leading consistently. We were at first puzzled by what seemed to be a mutually assured destruction as Maine Dems had promised to retaliate by killing their split votes but it seemed that Republicans had done their homework on statute there as legislative rules (or maybe even the state constitution) prevent any law passed in Maine from becoming law for 90 days. Which is why they waited until now to restart the special session push.

And to think that Lindsey flew all the way to friggin Nebraska with nothing to show for it.

Through whatever quirks of history most of them – 36 state, three territorial – are held during the midterms, while the remainder are in the odd-numbered years.

The RGA can hang onto their cash and wait until next year’s Virginia and New Jersey races.

The conventional wisdom among political reporters these days is once the October 1st Vance-Walz debate comes and goes that, depending on that one’s outcome, Trump will seek to face Harris one more time because he won’t want Jaydee to have “had the final word.”

The FBI’s annual “Summary of Crime in the Nation” report, covering the years 2022 to 2023 but released Monday due to the time-intensive data collecting and number crunching, shows that violent crimes drop 3 percent in the period while property crimes went down 2.4 percent, NBC News reports on what’s no doubt some kind of election interference scam because it feels like crime is out of control and only Trump can fix it. One the worst crimes, murder and non-negligent manslaughter were down an estimated 11.6 percent – the largest one-year decline in decades – while rape decreased by an estimated 9.4 percent even though we’re being invaded by Venezuela and Haiti.

On the plus side for the MAGA kids though is that car theft went up about 7.6 percent.

The Biden Administration Department of Commerce on Monday unveiled a proposal for a ban on all Chinese and Russian-made tech for cars sold in the US, Bloomberg reports.

A violent internecine struggle between rival factions within Mexico’s notorious Sinaloa Cartel has inspired one side to come up with its own signature for their gruesome handiwork: leaving corpses of its victims on in public wearing sombreros as a warning to their enemies, CBS news reports.

At least five bodies wearing the wide-brimmed hats were found by cops Saturday on the streets of Sinaloa amid a wave of bloodshed as differing factions seek to seize power within the cartel following the July arrest of the syndicate’s co-founder Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada. It’s not clear what message the sombreros – a cultural symbol of Mexico – are supposed to convey to the enemy faction of the cartel, as in whether one side see themselves as more authentically Mexican than the other. Or that the victims are simply taking a “permanent siesta.” Either way, its pretty uninspired and cliched, like they might as well be Al-Qaeda goons putting turbans on their victims.

Then there’s the labor requirement of carrying a stack of sombreros around at the ready every time they could encounter their rivals, though maybe they assign one of the newer guys to hang back with them while the more experienced crew members stage an ambush. Like “hat guy” is the grunt role every rookie needs to suck up and do if they want to move up. It’s probably a little easier than being “pizza guy” in the rival faction as their signature, per CBS, is to use a knife to pin a slice of pizza on the bodies of their victims. That’s gotta be a pain in the ass to carry a boxed pizza around everywhere they go. But it’s definitely more interesting than the sombrero sign, even if its message is just as inscrutable. Election officials in Portage County, Ohio on Friday announced that the board had voted 3 to 1 to contract with private security and local police departments – rather than deputies under dipshit MAGA Sheriff Bruce Zuchowski – to provide security for voters on election day after Zuchowski posted on Facebook a call to write down the addresses of neighbors with Harris-Walz 2024 signs so they would (purportedly) know where to dump migrants in the event of a Harris win, WKYC reports.

“As Chair of the Board of Elections and the other Democratic member of the Board of Elections, made the second. We hope the voters of Portage County will vote this November free of any concerns of intimidation with this security in place,” wrote Portage Dem Party/County Board of Elections Chair Randi Clites in a post. “This morning as one of the four Board of Elections Board Members, I made a motion to amend and update the Portage County Election Administration Plan for 2024. The motion was to remove the Sheriff Department from providing the election security at the Board Office during In-person Absentee Voting. The Board is weighing its options to utilize private security already in place at the Administration Building or the Ravenna Police Department. My motion passed 3-1. [Amanda Suffecool, chair of the Portage Republican party voted NO].”
