Sussex County, Delaware removed a centuries-old whipping post from the front of its county courthouse today, with a crew excavating the post that had been used as recently as 1952 to execute sentences on convicts, according to WPVI.
The post had been used to punish crimes from petty theft up to rape and such sentences were disproportionately dispensed upon Blacks and other people of color, according to the county Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs.

While the disposition of the artifact has not been determined, county officials have speculated that it may be sent to a museum as a display piece.
