RNC Day 3 takeaways

  • For the night when the nomination of Mike Pence was supposed be the highlight of the program, remarkably little was said about him and his accomplishments.  Maybe that’s because there’s not a lot to say about him, and he hasn’t accomplished much.
  • Regardless of the announced topic for each day of programming, the republicans are very short on content.  The talking points are becoming repetitious and there’s no new content.
  • The production quality of the pre-taped segments is competent, but not noteworthy.  They’re basically chat-show with stock footage in between.  The entire production has a feel of an overly-long high school graduation, where every student who wins an award (for perfect attendance, most creative, best smile, etc.) gets 5 minutes to speak.
  • The quality of speakers dropped off a cliff Wednesday night.  Many of the speakers–particularly Kellyanne Conway and Kayleigh McEnany–seems like they were spot fillers because they couldn’t get anyone else.

  • I understand that anti-choice legislation is a key anger-inducing issue for some republicans, but having no fewer than five speakers on one night make it key parts of their segments was overkill.
  • Elise Stefanik may have a future in the republican Party, but she has no chance for winning national office.  If you think this RNC is an audition for the next face–male and female–of the republican Party, she wouldn’t be in the top five of talent.
  • While republicans are quick to use police as a part of their “aggrieved agenda,” not a single speaker has condemned the actions of bad cops who shoot unarmed people, or the Kenosha shooter.  By refusing to acknowledge the legitimacy of the anger that’s causing unrest, the republicans are demonstrating their disconnection from the root of the problem.
  • Having nothing–not a word–about the cancelation of pro sports games today because of the murder of Jacob Blake shows a willful ignorance of current events, and it’s a problem with so much of the program pre-recorded.
  • I like MSNBC and CNN doing real-time fact-checking, however, they skip some speakers to do so.  One case:  Lara Trump was skipped altogether on MSNBC.  I didn’t expect her to have anything earth-shattering to say, but she is a key part of the campaign and was one of the headliners.
