A 25-year-old Nevada man is reportedly the first person in the United States to be reinfected with the coronavirus, NBC News reports.
The patient originally tested positive for the virus in April and recovered. At the end of May, he again got infected with a different strain of the novel coronavirus, this time, with a more severe case of the COVID.
“The evidence so far suggests that if you’ve been infected and recovered, then you’re protected for some period of time,” Dr. Ashish Jha, director of the Harvard Global Health Institute, told NBC. “We don’t know how long, and we’re going to find individual cases of people for whom that’s not true.”
Three other people, one in Hong Kong and two in Europe, have had suspected reinfections, but they experienced a less severe case during the second infection.
