In a somewhat bizarre interview where he apparently didn’t understand what he was saying the Justice Department was doing violated people civil rights, Attorney General William Barr said that he didn’t believe there were “two justice systems” in the United States.
During the CNN interview with Wolf Blitzer, Barr said he had heard similar stories as the one President Trump has recently touted about planes full of “antifa” traveling to sites of unrest.
He announced that the DoJ was monitoring the travel of some American citizens and even tracking the purchases some people made in stores. Without proper warrants, both those actions would be violations of people’s Constitutional rights.
“They are flying around the country, we know people who are flying around the country, we know where they’re going, we see some of the purchases they’re making before the riots of weapons to use in those riots,” Barr said.
Barr also downplayed the recent attention given to the deaths of multiple Black people at the hands of police officers.
“I don’t think there are two justice systems,” Barr said. “I think the narrative that the police are in some epidemic of shooting unarmed black men is simply a false narrative and also the narrative that’s based on race.”
He also tried to dismiss the concept of racism by invoke a statement attributed to Jesse Jackson, a civil right leader.
“Didn’t Jesse Jackson say that when he looks behind them and he sees a group of young Black males walking behind them, he’s more scared than when he sees a group of white dudes?” Barr asked. “Does that make him a racist?”
Barr also stated that neither Barack Obama nor Joe Biden were under investigation by the DoJ, despite Trump’s claims that “Obamagate” was the biggest political crime in American history.
