The ball is now officially in Mitch McConnell’s court.
Democratic Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and Democratic Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer announced in a joint letter Wednesday that they are backing a $908 billion coronavirus relief bill proposal hammered out by a bipartisan team of Senators, Yahoo News reports.
Previous aid bill have died in the Senate because Senate Majority Leader McConnell could not garner enough support in his caucus to pass the bill. This includes the HEROES Act, passed by the House in May, and a scaled-down version of the bill, with a $2.2 trillion price tag, offered by Pelosi later.
McConnell also failed to rally the Republican caucus to support a $1.5 trillion offer made by Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, who took over negotiations for the White House after McConnell was pushed out of the process.
The price tag for the bill forwarded to McConnell by Pelosi and Schumer on Monday wasn’t publicly disclosed, but it was believed to be closer to the bipartisan Senate plan. McConnell, on the other hand, released a $333 billion of his own on Tuesday.
Asked about the bipartisan proposal, McConnell said, “We just don’t have time to waste time.”
“The place to start is, are we actually making a law or are we just making a point,” McConnell continued. “The way you make a law for sure is you’ve got a presidential signature.”
The flaw in McConnell’s logic is that outgoing president Donald Trump vowed a “bigger” bill than the $2.2 trillion bill prior to the election. However, Trump is now a lazy, vindictive lame duck, and it is unclear if he will sign any relief bill before he leaves office.
