Random thoughts Friday, Volume IX

  • Trump getting a vaccine in secret for a virus he claims is a hoax is the perfect microcosm of Trumpism.
  • Tucker Carlson is like cotton candy for the alt-right:  it’ll give you a rush as you consume it.  It’s got no substance.  And you feel like crap afterward.  Plus, if that’s all you get, it’ll kill you.
  • I’m happy we have a president whose metric for success is the number of people vaccinated, not the number of people who attend a rally.
  • So-called liberals who are crying that “Biden abandoned us!” and “Democrats are going down in ‘22” because the national $15 minimum wage didn’t get included in the American Rescue Plan need to remember that Biden doesn’t control the rules of the Senate and that if Senate Democrats ignored the ruling of the Parliamentarian, they’d be setting the Senate up for chaos in the future.  The GOP would not follow *any* rules in the Senate, citing Democrats’ dismissal of the ruling.  And if you think not voting in 2022 (or voting 3rd party or for Republicans) is the answer, you’ll have no one to blame but yourself for the post-Trump resurrection of the GOP you’ve enabled.
  • I prefer to listen to radio broadcasts of baseball games than to watch them on television.  A good baseball announcer is a lyrical artist who can made you feel involved when nothing’s happening.
  • Evidence that the GOP is the Cult of Trump:  the North Carolina Republican Party censured Senator Richard Burr for voting to convict Trump in his second impeachment trial, but they’re silent on the multitude of sexual assault and lies told by Madison Cawthorn.
  • About 80% of Americans support Biden’s American Rescue Plan, but a handful of Washington Republican elites are trying to tell Americans they know what’s best for them.
  • People who don’t let their dogs on the furniture miss the snuggle, and the snuggle is real.
  • I don’t necessarily support eliminating the filibuster, but I agree it needs to be reformed.  I favor bringing back the requirement that the objecting member keep the floor.  I also think the burden should be put on the objecting (minority) party, requiring them to produce 40 votes on record to maintain the filibuster, instead of requiring the majority party to produce 60 votes to override it.
  • For a Party that promotes itself as one against government interference and regulation, Republicans certainly seem to like them regarding voting and vaccines.
  • The people complaining the loudest about the Dr. Seuss foundation’s decision to take some of Seuss’s catalogue out of print have clearly never read a Dr. Seuss book or failed to learn what Seuss books taught.
  • It’s very difficult for me to read in a quiet room.  I have to have music (classical or jazz) on, or even a television, on in the background.  Strangely, I can’t have music with lyrics on, because I find myself singing along with the songs, nor can I read while people in a nearby room are having a conversation.  (My wife is exactly the opposite:  she needs quiet.)
  • Favorite high school subjects:  Math (specifically geometry), Earth/Space Science, my Senior year English class (which concentrated on American literature).  Least favorite:  Biology (more because of the teacher than the subject matter).
