Academy Award-winning actor Matthew McConaughey, a native of southcentral Texas, has a 12-point lead over incumbent Republican governor Greg Abbott according to a recent poll by The Dallas Morning News and the University of Texas at Tyler, Insider reports.
Abbott is enjoying all-time high disapproval rates among voters after Texas suffered deadly power outages in February that left scores dead and with a push to set aside coronavirus precautions by putting the onus of enforcement on individual businesses.
Abbott is running for a third term as governor in November 2021. McConaughey has said he is taking running for governor as a “true consideration.”
